Gang Show Programme Extract:
1983
The following text has been taken
word-for-word from the 1983 Show programme. Although the text was
relevant at the time, it may not be relevant (or current) now.
These Gang Shows

On the 31st October 1932, in the Scala Theatre, London, a new scheme
was born. it was called "The Gang Show 1932", and was written and
produced by "A Holborn Rover".
So it was that Gang Show came into
being and, apart from the war years, there was a completely new
Scout Gang Show performed in London each year until 1974.
Now Gang Shows are produced all
over the world and always the story is the same - they are all small
hits. There has been a film made of the Gang Show; it has been
featured on television many times; it has twice taken part in Royal
Command Performances, as was often attended by Royalty.
The "Holborn Rover" of 1932 has
come to be known far and wide as Ralph Reader CBE, and it was he who
wrote all the material for all Gang shows since 1931 - and no mean
feat!
Through Gang Shows, Ralph Reader
can claim to have raised nearly a million pounds for Scouting,
entertained many thousands of audiences, and given much happiness to
countless Scouts.
Sadly, Ralph Reader died less than
a year ago. {1982}
Our {1983} Gang Show is the first
to be presented in Inverness since the Ness Gang Shows of the 1960s,
and it is the first ever in Eden Court. With the combination of the
superb facilities of the theatre and Ralph Reader's well-proven
format, we in Inverness can claim to have produced a Gang Show which
has contributed in a small way to the Gang Show success story. |
