Pat Sajak once fooled his Wheel of Fortune co-star Vanna White with a hair-raising April Fool’s Day prank. And this was no basic prank, this took hours of preparation, and a team of people to pull off.

Sajak pulled the prank at the close of the April 1, 2008 show. During the segment where he and White banter and say goodnight, he tells her he has something to confess. Because “there is nothing more stressful than living a lie,” he said.

Rumors that Sajak was wearing a toupee have persisted for years online. Fans speculate about it in forums and joke about it online. The legendary host has always quipped that if he were wearing a hairpiece he’d pick a better one than that.

So when he broke down and confessed to White at the end of the show that he was actually entirely bald, people were stunned. Even White, who wasn’t in on the gag, was completely floored by the revelation.

Just like revealing the letters, Sajak asked White to “unveil” him to the world and remove his wig. After some coaxing, she did and was in absolute shock when every strand slid off into her hands.

“You can keep that,” Sajak joked to White, as she tried to process what was happening. can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Wheel of Fortune: Is Pat Bald? (

Is ‘Wheel of Fortune’ Host Pat Sajak Really Bald?

So, is the legendary host truly bald or not? No, he has a full head of hair. Despite fans breaking down the prank frame-by-frame like the Zapruder film, it was a bald cap, make-up, and a very convincing wig. One he wore that entire episode of filming.

Eventually, he showed how it was done. You can check out the video here. Needless to say, it was a major undertaking that took hours in the make-up chair. Wheel of Fortune aired the step-by-step process. Basically, make-up artists covered his real hair with a bald cap and covered that in make-up to match his skin tone.

“They even put on little moles and things,” he said, almost giddy he was able to pull off such a prank.

When they finally added the toupee, Pat Sajak joked, “And there’s my fake hair, which, come to think of it looks better than my real hair, actually.”

And, just for good measure, White tugged on his actually hair during the explanation to prove it was real.
