Have You Received A Beautiful Golden Angel Coins with Your Change?
Well, I got one from the stamp machine a few years back and put it aside. This evening I came across it again and decided to take a closer look. There was no markings on the outside edge that a true coin generally has stating “In God We Trust”, the year minted and any minting place designation. Then I flipped the coin over and noticed the same Angel image on the back.

Hmm… this Beautiful Angel Coin is NOT a Coin at All
As I googled my description of this piece, it became clear what I had thought was a $1 gold coin was not a coin at all, but a token passed as a coin. The golden finished piece was so beautiful I held onto it think it was just a new $1 coin that came out.
What I Learned About This Is…
It is nothing but a guardian angel token for Good Luck given out by the Catholic Relief Services. There is no gold in “dem dar pieces” either, but the golden finish makes them very appealing to anyone receiving one. I read in a comment on Reddit that some ex-Catholics believe the token is haunted – and another received their coin as a teen and was told that it was a reminder to them that God is always with them in troubling times.1
Well, then I found a site that made it seem more like there is some mystique and promise as I read, “the Legend of the Angel Coin in that whoever owns one of these is promised love, money, and happiness. The original “Angel Coin” was minted by Augustine Dupre, a nobleman who was commissioned by King Louis XVI in 1792 to design the new monetary currency for France. A firm believer in the power of guardian angels, Dupre incorporated this theme into his design using a mold of unknown material created by an alchemist known only as Le stat.
Years later, when Dupre fell out of favor with the King and was condemned to death, legend has it that he was saved from the guillotine when the Coin he carried as a talisman reflected the sunlight in his jail cell so brilliantly one day that the guard on duty broke into tears at the sight, unlocked the cell door, and let Dupre make his escape.

From that moment on, Dupre’s creation became known as the “Angel Coin”. He considered it a blessing for his life-long belief in angels.” 2
Do These Tokens Carry Any Worth?
Well, as far as monetary or collector value, they have no value other than they are intended to bring a peace of mind to the bearer with a feeling of good luck wished upon them.
What Could I Expect to Get for on Marketplace or at a Flea Market?
Well, if you have one of these token that is worn, you could expect to get less than a dollar. If in fairly good condition, you could get $1. If it is fully uncirculated, you could ask $4.00 for it. As for this token, and I am not a Catholic just a humble Episcopalian, and I think I will make a necklace out of it and ask God to please bring good luck to whoever wears it.3
